The New Stability of The Fall

Last Friday, I was the guest presenter on Ed Pinsent’s Sound Projector radio show on Resonance FM. This week’s theme was the music of The Fall, and specifically the music of its current and longest lasting incarnation.  Podcast and playlist here.

The show included a featurette on singer Mark E Smith’s adaptations of ‘The Spider and The Fly’, a track by The Monocles which is familiar to fans of ’60s garage music thanks to the compilation Pebbles volume 3: The Acid Gallery.  It turns out The Monocles were a real band, not a studio invention: find out more this interview with one of the members.

Friday 20th Sept: Sparks show

I’m joining Ed Pinsent in the studio for this Friday’s edition of the Sound Projector show, which will be devoted to the music of Ron & Russell Mael aka Sparks, best known in the UK for their 1974 hit ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough for the Both of Us’ (and the frightening TOTP appearance that accompanied it) but now with 20+ albums and hundreds of great songs to their name.
Listen in at 5.30pm BST on London’s Resonance 104.FM (or streamed via http://resonancefm.com/).
Update: The show is now available as a podcast (with full playlist) on the Sound Projector website. See The Sparks Brothers.

Defrost Setting on The Sound Projector radio show

I’m guest presenter on this Friday’s Sound Projector radio show on London’s Resonance 104.4 FM (also streamed online to the world).

It’ll be an impressionistic musical tribute to the final days of winter, a follow up of sorts to the summer weather show I did back in 2008.

It’s on from 5.30pm – 7pm GMT.  Hope you can tune in.

Update: Here’s the playlist and podcast.

Bad Weather Report

Sat in again for Ed Pinsent on the Sound Projector show last Friday, where I mixed a bunch of diverse tracks into an impressionistic take on this summer’s weather.

Dub and Reggae show this Friday on Resonance FM

I’ll be sitting in for Ed Pinsent on The Sound Projector radio show again this Friday, filling the airwaves and copper pipes with the heavy sounds of dub and reggae, in what will be a follow up of sorts to the show Ed did way back in 2004.

As usual, central Londoners can tune in on 104.4 FM and the rest of you can hear it online at http://resonancefm.com/listen

Beach Boys Bounty

On 16th May I co-presented a Beach Boys special for Ed Pinsent’s Sound Projector show on Resonance FM. This was a Pet Sounds and Smile-free zone, avoiding those over-discussed records in favour of little known gems from the early albums, surf instrumentals, a capella songs, the ‘Sock It To Em’ period, Brian Wilson’s work with the Honeys and American Spring, tracks written or produced by the other Beach Boys, and the Holland period.
You can now listen to the show here.
