Mystery Dick

A duo of Ed Pinsentcartoonist (Illegal Batman, Windy Wilberforce, Drake Ullingsworth), Sound Projector radio show and magazine – and Harley R – publisher and editor of Ugly Mug comic. They are non-musicians who deploy obscure and intuitive methods to create ‘made up music’ and unforgettable sounds.

‘The Dick’ erupted onto the musical landscape back in the mid-1990s with the legendary Volcano Tape, and have performed and recorded sporadically ever since. Albums include One Note Mind, Pensioners Fear Hall, In the City of Violent Giants (recorded live at the Phoenix Arts Centre, Brighton), and Single Angel, a contemplative collaboration with the Chelsea Madrigal Group.

Solo

One weekend in the late 1990s, Harley was inspired to record a cover of He Pep! by The Fall, based not on the studio version but on his memory of a largely instrumental live performance of the song performed by Fall members Julia Nagle, Steve Hanley and Simon Wolstencroft.

He inserted some new lyrics imagining the motivations of several people he encountered while working at the BBC. Harley sent this recording to Mark E Smith as part of an application to join the band. The application failed, the recording was used as the intro to a London gig broadcast on XFM. Listen here…
